Built in 2004, Phifer Science Hall reflects Converse’s commitment to preparing for the ever-changing world of science and technology. Phifer was designed for 21st-century flexibility, interdisciplinary teaching, student/faculty research, enhanced interaction and in-lab lectures. Here, science majors are provided space for upper-level research and advanced learning opportunities.
Home to the Department of Natural Sciences, the 36,000-square-foot facility houses the latest laboratory instruments and computing equipment. Phifer also boasts a collection of museum quality artwork by Southern female artists.
Phifer houses a greenhouse which provides a year-round lab for botanists on campus.
Greeting all who enter Phifer’s front doors is a bronze sculpture of Maria Mitchell, arguably the most famous American scientist of the 19th century, by renowned sculptor Elliot Offner.
